A Milestone in South Sudan’s Fight Against Malaria: Reflections from Amina Health Alliance

In November 2022, South Sudan marked a major milestone by hosting its first National Malaria Conference. For the Amina Health Alliance, this gathering was more than an event; it was a turning point in the nation’s fight against malaria, the deadliest disease affecting communities across the country.
Malaria remains South Sudan’s leading health crisis, responsible for nearly 67% of outpatient visits and almost half of hospital deaths. The three-day conference brought together government leaders, health experts, and regional partners to align strategies for tackling the disease.
From the Vice President’s urgent call to action to the Health Minister’s pledge of $500,000 for malaria interventions, the event highlighted the growing political will to address the crisis. The launch of the “Zero Malaria in South Sudan Starts with Me” campaign emphasized the critical role of community-led awareness and action.
Regional delegates from Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda shared successful approaches, while participants in South Sudan faced the realities of weak supply systems, recurring floods, and population displacement. These discussions showed that while the challenges are complex, there is a shared determination to move forward.
At Amina Health Alliance, we see this as a pivotal step. The conference demonstrated that progress against malaria requires more than medicine; it demands collaboration, commitment, and community ownership.
Looking Ahead
The fight against malaria is central to strengthening South Sudan’s health system. As a women-led consulting firm, Amina Health Alliance remains committed to supporting solutions that combine political leadership, technical expertise, and grassroots engagement.
